How did Coconut Oil get such a bad rap?

Why does coconut oil have a terrible stigma in our minds? I read something very interesting that tied it all back to economics. Years ago it was bad mouthing by the soy and corn industries that promulgated the idea that "coconut oil is evil." A few publicity campaigns fueled by bad information made coconut oil seemingly extinct from our diets.

It seems that at some point in time we turned away from coconut oil and toward trans fatty acids. Now there is a lot of publicity about trans fatty acids along with new labeling requirements going into effect this year. However, while we admonish trans fatty acids, we still don't welcome coconut oil. Why is that? The health benefits are everywhere. Yet we still turn away from this good saturated fat. Hmmm. Is our thinking that guided by publicity? Right or wrong?
