Coconut Oil – energy and increased metabolism!

Okay, so last night after a couple of hours of arduous volunteering, I met some friends at my favorite neighborhood hangout. After stuffed jalapeños, French fries and anything else I could find to dip in ranch dressing as well as the sugar fix I had with cookies and ice cream when I came home…I was feeling pretty awful. I don’t usually eat such a poor diet and I knew my body would be suffering the next day.

The next morning I drank hot tea with honey and coconut oil as soon as I woke up. I have been reading about how much energy organic coconut oil gives you. Wow. I was surprised! About 30 minutes after I had the coconut oil, I got a bunch of work done and zipped off to do a power workout. I should have been sluggish and whiney as with any other time I filled my body with junk.

So what is it about coconut oil that gives you energy and makes you feel amazing?
Medium Chain Fatty Acids! Coconut oil is composed of MCFAs which are turned into energy when they are metabolized in the liver. The result is a great, long-lasting energy boost. You may just want to rethink that morning coffee!

Will all of this energy come at the price of weight gain?
Coconut oil actually boosts your metabolism. Coconut oil and MCFAs produce energy that you use as you are going about your day. Because you are using the fuel for energy, it does not turn into fat that is stored in fat cells like Long Chain Fatty Acids. This is contrary to everything we know about saturated fats. It turns out that not all saturated fats are equal!

Try 3 tablespoons of virgin coconut oil a day as a test. You may not want to have it before you go to bed as you may have to much energy to sleep!
